From Haynes' series "Colored Cabinets of Noted Indians" this trio depicts members of the Crow Tribe native to the Montana plains and Yellowstone region, a locale that commanded the majority of Haynes' attention and interest throughout his career. The subjects are as follows;
1490. Squaw Jessie Iron Bull 2857. Chief Little Head
Jessie Iron Bull is often identified as a baté (sometimes spelled badé or boté). From a word meaning "not a man, not a woman" batés are male bodied, two-spirited members of the Crow community who take part in some of the social and ceremonial roles traditionally filled by women. However, we have so far been unable to find any 19th-century sources to corroborate this claim.
