Rare collection of early-20th century photographs showing open pit mining operations in Sierra Mojada, Coahuila, located in northeast Mexico. There is one, which appears to be a bit earlier, showing the many miners standing atop one of the structures. This image bears a caption in the negative reading”Exploradora Tiro Crespo No. 2.” The rest are uncaptioned, but seem to show the same location, as the structure in the identified image is present in the others. The photographs are sharply rendered and are all rich with detail, showing the towering machine amongst the desert landscape.

La Exploradora was the oldest mine in the area, having begun operations in 1886. It was a lead silver mine owned by a company of the name, and was leased to Francisco Armendaiz. It had many tiros (shots) including Exploradora, La Armendaiz, Crespo No. 1 and Crespo No. 2.

Over all a fine collection of images documenting the silver mining industry in Mexico.
