Likely shot by a fellow employee, this typological album contains hundreds of charming, candid portraits of the Japanese staff of the Yokota Officers Club, and other employees of the Yokota Air Base. Included are photos of the cooks, waiters, janitors, secretarial staff, the club’s baseball team, and other employees. They subjects are posed at various locations around the base, some leaning on cars or statues, others relaxing on the ground. Many are identified with accompanying paper captions and a number of the uniforms in the photos display the initials “Y.O.C.” in one way or another. A few of the album pages have fun cartoon drawings as well.
Located in Western Tokyo, Yokota Air Base was constructed in 1940. According to US intelligence from the period, Yokota was one of two bases, along with Tachikawa Air Base, that conducted all testing for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The bases were located near the factories for Nakajima Aircraft Company and Showa Aircraft Industry, making them ideal for purpose. Since the conclusion of World War II, Yokota Air Base has provided a center of operations for both the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and the United States Air Force (USAF). JASDF Air Defense Command Headquarters has been located at Yokota, along with the United States Forces Japan, since March of 2012. Today, approximately 14,000 personal are housed on the base.
