Leonor Fini was a surrealist painter, designer, illustrator and author. Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Italy, Fini moved to Paris in 1931 when she was 24 years old. Four years later, she had her first one-woman exhibition there, which attracted the attention of the Surrealists. Though she was close with many and participated in international exhibitions organized by them, her disdain for the Surrealists’ authoritarian attitudes and sexist beliefs kept her from officially joining the movement. Her first major exhibition was in 1936 in New York at Julian Levy Gallery and in 1943 she was included in Peggy Guggenheim's groundbreaking show “31 Women” at the Art of This Century gallery in New York.
