This album shows picturesque views along the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad. The railroad was founded in 1898 by Arthur Stillwell, for whom the town of Port Arthur, Texas (the last stop on the line) is named. But financial instability caused the line to be thrown into receivership and absorbed by the Kansas City Southern Railway in 1900. Because a number of these photographs clearly show train cars emblazoned with “Kansas City Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad,” we can date these photographs to the short time window of the line’s existence.
Present in the album are numerous views of ample farmland (possibly included to entice prospective farmers to the area). One particularly-interesting image was clearly taken from the top of the building with the chimney framing the center of the shot. There are pictures of woodlands, rivers, and other natural scenes. There are a handful of views of Pittsburg, KS, including the Water Works Building and the Hotel Stilwell, which was also funded by and named after Arthur Stilwell, as well as a few shots of the station at Port Arthur, with visible signs for the “Port Arthur Eating House” and Rail Road Saloon.”
Overall, a tidy and handsome album showcasing a short-lived railroad line.
