Grand Avenue in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles. The album begins with an exterior view of the building, followed by the reception desk, followed by twelve crisp, uniform photographs documenting the production facilities. For some of their products, the Fern company employeed a cold cement process, a low-cost method of producing a lightweight and flexible shoe, and this method is shown in some of the photographs.
The Fern Shoe Co. was founded by Oscar and Jules Fern in Boston in the 1920s. By the 1930s, they had relocated to Los Angeles and eventually partnered with Howard Sobel who was making shoes for Hollywood films, manufacturing and retailing ladies’ footwear brands such as “Ferncraft,” “So-Bel” and “ Pinelli.”
