Handsome portrait of Kiowa Chief Woman's Heart, one of the leaders who in 1868 fought Custer at Washita, and then the Third Cavalry at the Battle of Soldier Springs. He was later sent to prison at Fort Marion, in Florida. The photograph was taken by William Soule, the Massachusetts-born photographer who had a prolific career in the American West beginning with his relocation to fort Dodge in 1867.
