This extensive, typed and photographically-illustrated report of the Rosebud reservation was put together by Carl B Aamodt, Agricultural Extension agent for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Extension and Industry.
The report begins with a brief introduction which includes a list of communities involved with the extension program, a summary of activities and accomplishments, and the status of the extension organization followed by descriptions of different work programs.
This is followed by about 100 documenting showing extension programs, which are organized into a few different categories - Indian Organization;Rehabilitation and Resettlement; Livestock; Farm Crops and Gardens; Fairs and Exhibits; Nutrition and Preservation; Home Yard Improvement; 4-H Clothing; Fairs and Exhibits; and Arts and Crafts. Each section begins with a list of goals and results (“Goal: To plant 2,000 acres forage crops Result: Produced 1,300 tons from 1200 acres”). Some of these sections are extensively photographically-documented (Livestock, Gardens) while some only have one page of accompanying photographs (Arts and Crafts).
Many of the subjects in the photographs are identified, and the captions are often informal, sometimes jovial or comical, reading like they were written for a personal photo album, not a Government report. One picture, showing three small boys doing some gardening work, is captioned, “Youngsters at Ponca Helped too!”
The next section titled “Outlook and Recommendation” in which Aamodt lays out his thoughts on the progress of the program over the past year. This is followed by about 30 more pages of forms and sheets, charting how much produce was grown, how much was canned, how many buildings were constructed, etc.
Also included in the report is an interesting, 21-page “Canning Bulletin” for the Pine Ridge Reservation and the Rosebud reservations. Compiled by extension agents Mamie Searles and Martha Jane Butcher, the report offers different recipes for canned foods.
