A vibrant collection of photographs and printed matter capturing the essence of Southern California surf culture in the 1970s and 80s.

McStott’s photographs, showing surfers riding intense waves as well as posed casually by the shoreline, often speak to his close involvement with the culture and community. Other photographic material in the collection includes a pair of portraits of McStotts, one of which appeared in a 1973 issue of the Los Angeles times (a copy of the paper is included as well). There is also a photographically-printed Christmas Card for Surfing Magazine (where McStotts' work was sometimes published), and a photographic “signature” of McStotts, written in the sand.

Among the flyers are advertisements for surfing events including the California Longboard Classic, the Dewey Weber Longboard Classic, Queen of the Coast Longboard Classic, the Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest, and others. There are also flyers for screenings of surf-related films such as ““Locked In, “Tales of the Seven Seas,” “Waves Warriors,” and Ocean Fever.”

Also included are both printed and hand-written “heats” for different surfing events, newsletters, ads for surf shop promotions, bumper stickers, and other related ephemera.
