This rare vibrant poster advertises the 1971 United States Surfboard Championships, held at Huntington Pier in Huntington Beach, CA. The event was first held in 1959, then called the West Coast Surfing Championship. The name was changed in 1964 and today it is known as the US Open of Surfing.

The poster was designed by Earl Newman, an artist and printmaker who arrived in Venice, CA, in 1960 who produced silkscreens for coffee houses, jazz clubs, and surfing events with a singular “California Cool” aesthetic.
