Ten lovely, detailed paintings, completed on postcard paper by Nyla Thompson who, without the use of her body, painted each with her mouth. Each one is signed on the back...
Ten lovely, detailed paintings, completed on postcard paper by Nyla Thompson who, without the use of her body, painted each with her mouth. Each one is signed on the back and a few have a corrected Austin, Texas address. Also included is a printed postcard with a portrait of Thompson at work.
Born in Texas in 1928 Nyla Thompson was paralyzed at the age of 9 after becoming afflicted with polio. In the 1940s, she began making art holding the brush in her mouth and applying numerous tiny dots to the canvas, not unlike pointillism. Her chosen subjects were often animals, wildflowers, or Texas landscapes. In the 1950s, she created smaller versions of these scenes in postcard format. Reproductions of her postcard paintings were published by the Minneapolis Postcard Club and in the 1960s she received letters from FDR and Lady Bird Johnson, congratulating her on her work.
