A luxurious, unique copy of the 1924 work "Le Livre de Goha le Simple" by Albert Ades and Albert Josipovici. It was custom-bound by Eugene Jarrigeon with 45 of the novel’s original illustrations inset through, which were done by the Cubist painter Emmanuel Gondouin. Many of these illustrations showcase his dynamic work in the genre. As well, there are gouache paintings by Gondouin inset to the front and back covers.
Emmanuel Gondouin was born in Versailles in 1883 and pursued a career as a Cubist painter. Despite his close connection to Ossip Zadkine, Amedeo Modigliani and others on the scene, Gondouin was dubbed a "cursed artist" and by all accounts led a fairly miserable life. Living in Montmartre and Montparnasse, he occasionally found work as a draftsman but spent most of his life in poverty before dying in 1934. There was an exposition of his work in Paris in 1945, and it is possible this unique book was showcased there.
First published in 1919, “Le Livre de Goha Le Simple” is the second collaboration between Albert Adès and Albert Josipovici about Egyptian daily life. The second edition, with illustrations by Gondouin, was published in 1924.
