A handsome portrait of civil and mining engineer Robert Brewster Stanton led a survey party through the Grand Canyon in 1889-1890 as chief engineer of the Denver, Colorado Canyon and Pacific Railroad Company.
Born in Woodville, Mississippi in 1846, Stanton graduated from Miami University in 1871. Stanton was resident engineer of the Cincinnati Southern Railroad from 1874 to 1880. After that, he supervised the construction of the Georgetown Loop Railroad in the Colorado Rockies as chief engineer for the Georgetown, Breckenridge, and Leadville Railroad.
In 1889 he became involved with the newly-formed Denver, Colorado Cañon and Pacific Railway Company in a plan to construct a railroad through the canyons of the Colorado to the Gulf of California. As chief engineer of the project, Stanton led a survey through the Grand Canyon, becoming the second party (after Powell's) to successfully navigate the perilous journey.
