Atop a giant drum and with an elongated shadow behind him, Jacques Cartier is seen here performing his notable “Voodoo Dance,” which he performed across the country in the late 1920s and on screen in the 1930 film “King of Jazz.” A pioneer of modern dance, Cartier is best known for his interpretations of ethnic dances and incorporating traditional movements from different cultures into his work.
