A fascinating collection of notes and receipts relating to the Sun Sun Wo Co., a general store in Coulterville, Mariposa County, California. Written in Chinese and English characters, most have notations on both sides of the page. Included are invoices, accounting notations, and personal notes from local citizens to the owners of the Sun Sun Wo. One interesting note reads “I am way up here in the mountains working for a railroad co., will be back about the first of Dec.” Other notes speak to the close relationship the owners had with the local community, such as one which reads “I hear Joe is going to China – I wish him good luck.”
Named after its original owners, Mow Da Sun and his son, Sun Kow, the Sun Sun Wo Co. was established in Coulterville in 1851, and operated until 1926.
