An unusual identification card with an affixed portrait of R.H. Cook, who was hit with four years in Folsom Prison for pinching a ring after it was accidentally left in a room at the Western Hotel.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Cook denied “he took the ring left by Miss Harpole of Chico in the room at the Western Hotel later occupied by Cook. When arrested the officers found on his person the watch, chain, locket and a soiled handkerchief stolen from the room of A A Roeber, also the silver stamp case and silver match box taken from the room of Fred Stohrs, a commercial traveler,” but two checks belonging to Stohrs were still missing. The police later learned “Cook stole a valise from Robert J. Smith of Salt Lake City during the ride on the Western Pacific…and he was wearing some of the articles of clothing taken from the valise when arrested. He also stole a watch, a necktie and $330 In cash from the porter of the Pullman car on the trip.”

Staining to mount upper right, otherwise good condition.

From the estate of Ron Lerch.
