As described in the text, an Integral Neighborhood is “a community in which the various parts and systems (ecological, economic, architectural, social, and political) are consciously connected to one another as integral parts of the whole.” The text goes on to lay out proposals for buildings and land, ecology and energy, employment, precedents, and why Berkeley in particular is an ideal candidate for such a neighborhood.
The Integral Neighborhood is part of the ecocity movement. An ecocity is a human settlement modeled on the self-sustaining resilient structure and function of natural ecosystems.
