The March 1952 issue of Ebony highlighted Finnie’s Ball, a long-running Black drag ball in Chicago.
The first Finnie’s ball took place in 1935 and was organized by an African American queer street hustler and gambler named Alfred Finnie. It was held in the basement of a tavern on the corner of 38th Street and Michigan Avenue. The price to get in was 25 cents. Over time, it became a staple of the South Side Black queer culture and attracted hundreds of Chicagoans.
