Hugo Brehme, born in Germany in 1882, arrived in Mexico in 1908 with his wife and camera equipment. Though he intended only a short visit, he would remain in Mexico for the rest of his life, and is regarded as one of the founders of Mexican pictorialist photography.

After creating documentary photos, including views of the Mexican Revolution, Brehme turned to pictorialism. In 1923, he published a successful collection of his work ‘Mexico Pintoresco.” He documented rural scenes, landscapes, modern and archaeological monuments, and many other aspects of the country. His work was widely produced in the photo-postcard format.
