A charming group of photos showing the nearby gold rush towns of Angels Camp, in Calaveras County, and Sonora in Tuolumne. The photos were taken by William Wax, a commercial photographer who operated his Universal Art Studio in Columbia, also in Tuolumne.

The Angels Camp photos include two of the Utica Chlorination Works (one taken by a different photographer, G.W. Miller) and one showing the exterior of a home which is captioned on the back “Fred, Bess, and Hadley Beedle at Angels Camp.” This is dated 1900.

Sonora is represented by ten photographs showing a parade, most likely Fourth of July, and several spectators enjoying it from the balconies of Sonora’s famed Victoria Inn. There is also a photo of a prize-winning racehorse named Jean Valjean, one of a man named Valverdes and his pack mules, a group of unidentified miners, portraits of local residents, and more.
