A moody, abstract large-format scientific photograph of the founding in Frog Pond in the Boston Commons, illuminated by electric light. Electric light was first introduced to Boston in 1878 and five years later the common council contracted with New England Weston Electric to illuminate the public gardens.

The mount of the photograph there is a credit to Edward S. Ritchie, a Boston inventor and noted scientific instrument maker who first experimented with electric induction coils in the mid-1850s. However, we find no record of his photographic output.
