A rare image with an unusual story behind it, this cabinet card photograph shows a young Native American man identified as “Charley Hazlehead” and his unidentified wife. On the verso, there is a caption which reads:

“Hazlehead laid the plot and got two men to kill Quillayute Albert for the $200. He was bringing down the beach for S + after trade Hazlehead got $60, the Nitinat Indian got $60 and Sake-thy (?) of Ossett $80. The money was recovered and the three indians kept in jail for a time.”

We have been unable to find any other information about this caper.
