A signed cabinet card photograph showing Josie Edwards posed in uniform. Edwards was captain of the Independent Cadets (also called the Independent Guard), an Oakland-based Drill team that organized several popular events including a number of “camp fires” where they performed and competed alongside male companies.

As described in an 1880 article which appeared in the Oakland Morning Call:

“The Independent Guard is composed of young ladies, ranging in age from 15 to 18 years. They are straight, willowy girls, and march as though they had been born and bred in a military camp. Captain Josie B. Edwards commands the company, and evidently understands her new profession. This company created quite a furore by their remarkable expertness at drill during the past week, when they appeared every night in Germania Hall, during the progress of the Carnival.”

In 1884, Josie Edwards made headlines for shooting at a former suitor who married another woman instead (though both shots missed and no charges were filed).
