An interesting boudoir card photograph showing Katie B. Zook, along with two other unidentified evangelical missionaries, along with numerous converts. The photograph was taken in Yokohama, Japan, circa 1896.

Born in Grant City, Missouri, in 1873, Katie B. Zook traveled to Asia in the mid 1890s to perform evangelical missionary work While there, she wrote several articles which were printed in “The Evangelical Follower,” a religious track published in Abilene, Kansas.

In a lengthy 1896 essay, Zook’s writing mainly articulates the depth of her heartache at seeing so many “unsaved souls.” As she describes them, “poor people…in gross darkness…bowing to gods made of wood, brass and stone.” She goes on to state her belief that if “Christian America” could see what she has seen, they would doubtless give themselves over to the lord and proclaim, “If you can use me in any way to bring those poor benighted people to Christ, I would gladly surrender it all!”
