An interesting group of handsome platinum print photographs showing La Industrial, a large henequen cordage mill in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Included are exterior views of the grounds including the mill and stock house, a shot of employees spilling and balling the cordage, a view of the boiler room, one of the electric plant, and more.
Henequen, a plant native to the area, was at the center of Yucatán's economic life from about 1860 to 1940. The La Industrial mill, designed by leading U. S. cordage expert C. E. Dailey, officially opened in 1898 (the year photographs are dated). It employed three hundred workers, maintained four warehouses for storing raw fiber and finished cordage, and represented an investment of six hundred thousand dollars.
