A rare, substantial album showing numerous islands in the Caribbean at the end of the 19th-century. Included are scores of birds-eye views, crowded main streets, natural wonders, harbor scenes, and more. One interesting photograph shows Béhanzin, the one-time king of Dahomey who lived out the last years of his life as an exile in Martinique. Also pictured are the Fifth Volunteers encampments in Santiago Cuba, as well as the USS Brooklyn and USS Oregon. There are also a number of lively, interesting portraits showing different “market types” proudly displaying pigs, ducks, lobsters and fruit.
Identified photographers represented in the album include J. Murray Jordan, J.C. Wilson.
Places represented include Bermuda (nine photos); St. Croix, St. Eustatius, St. Martins, and St. Thomas (13 photos); St. Kitts and Nevis (18 photos); Antigua (17 photos); Dominica (nine photos); Guadalupe (eight photos); Martinique (19 photos); St. Lucia (six photos); St. Vincent (nine photos); Barbados (22 photos); Trinidad (six photos); Puerto Rico (14 photos) and Cuba (12 photos).
