The Great IXL (“I excel’) was operated by M.J. Flavin & Co. and contemporary advertisements declared itself to be the “Leading Clothiers, Furnishers and Hatters of the Pacific Coast" and one that offered “a tidal wave of bargains” to discerning buyers. Another advertisement declared that the Great IXL “seeks custom through legitimate channels, and never stoops to chicanery.” The firm also produced denim workwear, and was a one-time competitor with Levi's.
Though we have found several ads from 1882 offering “price lists, with handsome lithograph of the Great IXL lit by electric light, sent free on application” we have found no other record of this appealing print.
