Katharine Augusta Carl (sometimes spelled Katherine Carl) was an American portrait painter and author. Born in New Orleans in 1865, started her art education at the Tennessee State Female College but went to Paris after 1882 to further her studies and specialize in portrait painting. During her career, She made paintings of notable and royal people in the United States, Europe and Asia, including Prince El Hadj in Algiers, Paul S. Reinsch, and Sir Richard Dame. She is best known for her 1903 portraits of the Empress Dowager Cixi, completed in China over a nine-month period and exhibited in 1904 at the St. Louis Exposition. On her return to America, she published a book about her experience, "With the Empress Dowager of China."
