Mike Mandel's practice has long explored photography's vernacular forms—the utilitarian, commercial, and everyday uses of the medium that exist largely outside the gallery. His set of Baseball Photographer Trading Cards were modeled exactly on the Topps baseball format, portraying his peers and celebrated photographers—Imogen Cunningham, Ansel Adams, Bill Eggleston, Ed Ruscha among them—as though they were athletes, complete with photo-statistics and a numbered checklist.

The witty series wryly examines what happens when art photography is looked at through the lens of one of America's most widely circulated photographic products. The trading card was a familiar form—a way photographs had been reproduced, collected, and exchanged by millions of people who had quite possibly never set foot in a gallery or museum.
