This seemingly-unique album, offering “specimens of the flora of the Cape peninsula”, was published by the prominent South African commercial photographer Samuel Baylis Barnard in 1890. It contains thirty six “photographs from nature,” each delicately hand-colored and identified in red ink.
Floral specimens titles include:
Disa Grandiflora; Anemone; Watson; Hesperantha; Rochea Coccinea; Herschelia Coelestis & Disa Porresta; Tristoria Squalida; Protea; Lachenalia; Gladiolus; Erica Cerinthoides; Disa Venusta; Acanthus; Disa Venusta; Artistica Capitata; Agapanthus & Rochea Coccinea; Fresia; Protea; Erica; Microloma & Ixia; Abacus; Knysna Lily; Homoeria Collina; Erica Baccans; Pelargonium & Broom; Ericas; Harveya Capensis & Rochea; Belladona Lily; Sparaxis Pendula; Antholyza & Erica; Narcena; Auronzo; Disa Grandiflora; Satyrium; and Disa.
The front and back covers are detached, and some pages are loose from the binding. There is also a bit of foxing to some of the mounts, but the hand-coloring is uniformly rich and vibrant.
