An interesting double-exposure CDV showing the noted physician and abolitionist Dr. Ellwood Harvey.
Harvey was one of the first professors at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the world's first institute dedicated to training women as physicians. While teaching there in 1855, he helped to rescue an enslaved girl from Washington D.C. named Ann Maria Weems. Weems was disguised as a boy and rode in the buggy next to Dr. Harvey who acted the driver. She was safely transported to Philadelphia to the home of Black abolitionist William Still.
