Located in the Sawatch Range, Chaffee County, nearly three hours southwest of Denver, the now-ghost town of Saint Elmo, Colorado, was once an active mining community with a population of several thousand. The largest mine in the area was the Mary Murphy mine. The town was originally called Forest City, but this was soon changed due to the numerous other places with the same name. Saint Elmo was chosen because one of it's founders was, at the time, reading Augusta Jane Evans' 1866 novel "St. Elmo or Saved at Last".
