Garfield, Colorado, located in Chaffee County about 17 miles west of Saliada, was originally called Junction City when it was founded in 1880. It was one of the principal mining towns of the Monarch Mining District during the state's silver boom. The same year it was founded, the name was changed to Garfield and it was described as one of the busiest towns in the district. However, in 1883 a devastating fire began at the Farrell Saloon, which housed a large cache of dynamite. The blaze destroyed the entire business district. Though it was eventually rebuilt, it is a ghost town today.
