Founded in 1861, the mining town of Scales, Sierra County is located in the Poverty Hill Mining District, about 10 miles northwest of Downieville and roughly 5 miles south of La Porte.
The present collection of photos includes five cabinet cards of identified residents; a photo of the town's hotel founded by Joseph Gibson (shown in one of the other photos); a view of mining operations, and an extremely interesting CDV showing a group of people on skis. Because of the town's remote location, long skis were a primary method of travel.
