Jorie Remus is an American comedian active during the 1950s known for her stand-up performances at the legendary comedy clubs in San Francisco, The Purple Onion and the hungry i. This charming collection of eight press photographs show the talented comic shot in the Old Hollywood-style glamor of the era. Three images show her mid-performance while another three seem to be professionally shot promotional images, all documenting her dynamism and charismatic stage-presence. One image even includes the piano that Remus was known to sit on during her famous routine where she would sing and tell stories about love with her husky cigarette-voice, satirizing burlesque shows of the time. Jorie Remus was born on March 17, 1929 in New York City. While her personal career was brief, her influence is widespread. Remus mentored Maya Angelou at The Purple Onion and inspired a new line-up of sharp-tongued and quick-witted female comedians such as Joan Rivers, and more directly, Phyllis Diller.

Riding the success she found in San Francisco, Remus traveled to New York City to perform at the Blue Angel and eventually set up her own comedy spots in New York and Puerto Rico. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Remus continued to make appearances at different venues and television shows and was briefly married to Allan Murray before moving to Hawaii. After nearly a decade of recess, Remus was last featured in the popular TV programs Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum, P.I..
