Collection of Photographs Documenting Protests on Hollywood Boulevard Against Police Harassment of Sex Workers
The Los Angeles-based group CAT, or California Advocates for Trollops, was one of many local groups affiliated that advocated for the rights of sex workers in the 1970s. The group provided housing for sex workers in Los Angeles and advocated for increased federal funding for sex workers. On July 15 of 1977, the group organized a march on Hollywood Boulevard to protest police harassment of prostitutes in the area. CAT was affiliated with the San Francisco-based COYOTE group, and was one of several similar local organizations who advocated for sex workers during the late 1970s and beyond.
The protest of July 1977 drew scant local press coverage, with two images surviving at the LA Public Library archives. COYOTE reported on events such as this in their COYOTE Howls magazine, though we can find no record of the credited photographer, Leta Sparks. Overall a scarce and striking group from an important era in advocacy.
