Unusual vintage press photo showing the fake "head" of Frank Morris. One of four such counterfeit noggins constructed out of cotton sheets, soap, paint, and bits of human hair discarded from the barber shop, and used in a daring 1962 escape from Alcatraz prison.
Frank Lee Morris, alongside fellow convicts Allen West and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, used spoons from the dining hall and a drill fashioned from a vacuum cleaner to construct an escape tunnel (with Morris' nightly accordion practice covering the noise of their work). On the night of June 11th, 1962, Morris and the Anglin brothers placed the dummy heads in their respective beds and made their getaway (West was unable to get out of his cell). The three escapees were never seen again, though a makeshift raft made of raincoats and a bag of their mail eventually washed ashore. In 1979, the FBI declared the men deceased from drowning, though they remain on America's Most Wanted List.
