Norman Rothschild (1913-1995) was an American photographer and longtime editor of “Popular Photography” magazine. Dubbed by Edward Steichen as “the man who makes rainbows,” Rothschild was continually experimenting with different techniques and processes to push the boundaries of abstract color photography. Shortly after the invention of the Xerox 6500, the first electrostatic color-copier, Rothschild recognized its potential for abstract image-making. In 1976, he put on a show called “About 50 Xerox Color Prints” which demonstrated the potential of the process, anticipating the Risograph art and zine culture of the 1980s.
