“Moving Mountains” was created in 2012 as part of the “Aperture - Remix” commission and exhibition. For the project, Penelope Umbrico appropriated images from Aperture’s “Masters of Photography” series. Using her iPhone and a series of apps and filters, she photographed every mountain which appeared in the books. Utilizing images from Edward Weston, Wynn Bullock, Henry Cartier-Bresson, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and other male “masters” of classic photography, the series alters the notion of the analog landscape and its traditional maker.
