An interesting picture of (presumably) a family of Japanese musicians, posed with their instruments. With them is an unidentified woman, possibly Mrs. J.P. Moore of Lancaster, Pa. Mrs. Moore and her husband, Rev. J.P. Moore.

The Moores were both missionaries in Japan and when they returned to Lancaster in the early 1890s, they gave talks and lectures about Japanese life and customs, often doing so "in full costume." An 1892 article published in the Lancaster New Era, writes that their home contains, "a valuable collection representing many eras of Japanese civilization." And that "among the most interesting of the curios are several native musical instruments, on a couple of which Mrs. Moore has learned to perform. In Japanese music no time is marked, hence all music must be learned first by ear, and because Mrs. Moore found a way of marking time on her music, and hence learned to play new pieces quicker than others, she was looked upon as a sort of a gifted personage."
