From the 1950s through 1980s, filmmaker and photographer Jacques Prayer created humanistic portraits of sex workers and other denizens of Rue St. Denis, a notorious red light district of Paris. The present group was gifted to sex rights advocate Margo St. James, who became friends with Prayer after he photographed her and others at the first “Whore’s Congress” in Amsterdam in 1975.
Also included is a letter from Prayer to St. James, dated 1977, that he scribbled to her on the back of five of his photos.
