This handsome group of photographs documents a cross-section of architectural styles in Los Angeles in the 1930s. Shot by the commercial artist August Balbi, the photographs show municipal and commercial buildings such as the Los Angeles Public Library, the clubhouse in Exposition Park, USC’s Bovard Auditorium and the Wiltern Theatre, and the Cleopatra Arms Apartments, as well as residential homes and an image of the Fryman Ranch movie set. Two of the photos have credit stamps from “Pictura” magazine.
While we can find little information about Balbi's work as a photographer, there is much information available about his contributions to the world of shortwave radio. Known as "The Dean of DXers," Balbi was an active member of the National Shortwave Listeners Club for many decades.
