A charming, small-format promotional bird’s-eye view of Manhattan as seen from New York Harbor in the south, and including the Hudson and East Rivers and parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Bergen County, New Jersey, on the opposite shores. Copyrighted vy Root and Tinker after a work by J.W. Williams, this example was published by the successful clothing firm Rogers, Peet and Co. in 1879.
The buildings and bridges are rendered in what appears to be accurate proportions in the lower part of Manhattan; elsewhere they are indicated in a more generalized fashion. The building of Rogers, Peet & Co., located on Broadway and Broome, is particularly outsized. On the verso, there is a “Strangers Guide” to New York with scores of recommendations as to “How To See New York in One Week,” along with plenty of additional advertisements for Rogers, Peet & Co.
