A compelling, idiosyncratic example of machine-made self-portraiture, these “target photos,” were completed at arcade shooting galleries in the 1970s. Instead of a stuffed animal for a prize, a winning shot would trigger the camera’s shutter and a souvenir polaroid of the expert marksman would instantly develop. The photographs are both candid and performative. Some friends and bystanders stand idly by, seemingly unaware of the intended result. While others, expecting a hit, pose readily for their auto-portrait.
