A compelling, idiosyncratic example of machine-made self-portraiture, these “target photos,” were completed at arcade shooting galleries in the 1970s. Instead of a stuffed animal for a prize, a winning shot would trigger the camera’s shutter and a souvenir polaroid of the expert marksman would instantly develop. The photographs are both candid and performative. Some friends and bystanders stand idly by, seemingly unaware of the intended result.
