A pioneer in both street photography and night photography, the French-British artist Paul Martin constantly sought out new and inventive photographic methods to document the world around him. In the 1890s, he created a colorful series of carbon print “snapshots” of his seaside holidays. This 1893 image of the Jersey seascape was printed in a “sea green,” as per his notations on the verso of the image.
