A rare CDV photograph showing a large thrashing machine on a California farm. The photograph was taken by Edward Abraham Kusel. Kusel was born in 1824 in Mekhlenburg-Schwerin, then a part of Prussia. He came to America in the 1850s, and made his way west from New York. When he arrived in Placerville in 1852, he was one of the state’s first Jewish settlers. In the late he opened a photography studio in Oroville, then one in Marysville in 1859, and then two more in Sacramento and Chico. He owned a large farm in Oroville, not unlike the one pictures in the photo.
