This suite of five photographs documents the Broadway production of one of the towering plays of the 21st-century, Arthur Miller’s crushing indictment of the American Dream, “Death of a salesman.” The original production, directed by Elia Kazan, with groundbreaking, expressionistic sets by Jo Mielziner, starred Lee J. Cobb, Mildred Dunnock and Arthur Kennedy.
W. Eugene Smith, one of the great American photographers, photographed Broadway shows for Life Magazine, and here his singular photographic style pairs particularly well with the production and its subject matter.
