This survey of road improvements along Woodhaven Boulevard creates a wry deadpan portrait of the Queens neighborhood of Middle Village in the 1970s, with numerous shots of local gas stations, pizza parlors, bars with weekly Bingo tournaments, and other signs of the times. Many of the photos also show pedestrians ambling down the Boulevard’s adjacent sidewalks. Nearly all of the subjects are shown with their backs to the camera, adding another layer of inadvertent storytelling. In many examples, the frame is largely filled by the ground, as seen from eye level, akin to the work of street photographers at the time.
