Part of Ed Ruscha’s series of sly, hugely influential photo books, “Royal Road Test'' meticulously documents Ruscha and fellow artist and lifelong friend Mason Williams dropping a vintage typewriter from a speeding Buick. The book is a nod to the ubiquitous detritus of the American highway, as well as a wry pushback against romantic notions of the road epitomized by Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac (who famously typed his masterpiece on a continuous, 120-foot scroll of tracing paper).
