A thick scrapbook with hundreds of criminals’ mugshots compiled from the sensationalist periodical “The Illustrated Police News.” Within the sprawling Rogues Gallery there are hundreds of identified swindlers, grifters, grafters, five-finger artists, “old school” pickpockets, “high daddy” pickpockets, scapegraces, forgers, embezzlers, sneak thieves, diamond thieves, bicycle thieves, thieving maids, desperados, cracksmen, highwaymen, she-devils, man-devils, murderous thugs, vitriol-throwers, and many, many others. Many of the portraits are mounted to envelopes which contain a news-clipping summarizing the perp’s nefarious deeds.
There are a few manuscript dates and other notations, suggesting this was possibly used by someone in law enforcement. The front and back covers are detached and there is some chipping to album pages, otherwise fine condition.
